Everything practical about Auchencairn in one place: the shop, the halls, the school, the groups, and who to ring when something needs doing. If you have just moved here, this is the page to read.
- Everyday things — the shop, the defibrillator, the bins
- Places, food, families and services
- Clubs and groups — and who to ask
- Halls to hire, getting about, and emergencies
Everyday things
The Community Store
The village shop is in Heughan House on Main Street, run by the community as a shop and a meeting place. Open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm. Telephone 01556 640055.
Takeaway nights
Three nights a week, to order in advance — ring the shop or send a message, and ask the price when you book.
- Monday — fish and chips
- Friday — curry
- Saturday — stone-baked pizza, ordered before 4pm
Where the food comes from
Torr Organic Dairy, Mitchells of Castle Douglas for fruit and vegetables, Grierson Bros, and candles from a local maker.
Helping out
Volunteers are always welcome, particularly on Mondays and during the school holidays. Ring the shop, or see Community Groups for who to ask.
The defibrillator
There is a public defibrillator outside the Community Store. It is for use when somebody has collapsed and is not breathing normally — ring 999 first, and the operator will tell you where the nearest one is and give you the code if it is locked.
To be added: a photograph of exactly where it is on the building, and who checks it and how often.
Bins and recycling
Collections are run by Dumfries and Galloway Council, not by the community council. Their own pages are the reliable answer, because collection days change and a date copied onto this site would go quietly out of step.
- Bins and recycling — look up your own collection days by address
- Latest service status — worth checking after snow or a storm, when rural routes are missed first
To be added: which day the bins go out in Auchencairn, and which weeks are which colour. Deliberately left blank rather than guessed — a wrong bin day means a bin standing out overnight for a week.
Still to come
To be added: post and deliveries, the doctor and the pharmacy, broadband and mobile coverage, and anything else a new arrival needs in the first week. If something is missing that you had to ask a neighbour about, tell the council and it belongs here.

Run a business or a service in the village and want to be listed? Tell the council. There is no charge and it is not advertising — a name, what you do, and however much contact detail you are happy to have on a public page. If you would rather not publish a number, the entry can say to ask the council instead.
Clubs and groups
Almost everything that happens in Auchencairn is run by volunteers, and most of them would rather you rang than wondered. This is who to ask.
Meeting times are not typed in here — they come from the diary, which works out the next date rather than relying on somebody remembering to update it.

Halls to hire, getting about, and emergencies
- Our venues — the Murray Hall and the Church Hall, what they cost and when they are free.
- Getting around — buses, and the roads out of the village.
- Emergency information — the numbers worth having, and the village resilience plan.
- Report a problem — a road under water, a tree down, a burst main. A photograph helps.
