Emergency information

What to do and who to call when something goes wrong in the village. Worth reading before you need it — urgent updates appear as a banner at the top of every page on this site.

Seen something?

A road under water, a tree down, a burst main — anything the rest of the village would want to know. Report a problem and a volunteer will look at it. You do not need an account.

Warnings in force now

Live from the Met Office and SEPA. If this section cannot reach them it says so rather than implying all is well.

In an emergency

  • Police, fire, ambulance, coastguard — 999
  • Police, non-emergency — 101
  • Power cut — 105 (free, from any phone, anywhere in Britain)
  • NHS 24, when it is not life-threatening — 111

To be added: the Scottish Water emergency number, the SEPA Floodline number, and the out-of-hours number for Dumfries and Galloway Council. These are deliberately left blank rather than guessed — an emergency page with a wrong number on it is worse than one with a gap.

Defibrillator

A public access defibrillator can be used by anyone, with no training. If you call 999 the operator will tell you where the nearest one is and give you the access code.

To be added: the location of the village defibrillator (and a photograph of where to find it), plus who checks it and how often.

Flooding

To be added: which parts of the village flood, where sandbags are kept, and who to contact.

Snow and ice

To be added: where the grit bins are, which roads are gritted by the council, and the arrangements for clearing paths.

Village emergency plan

Many communities keep a short plan setting out who does what if the village is cut off — by snow, flooding or a long power cut.

The council is now working on one — see the village resilience plan.
