Nearly everything in Auchencairn happens because somebody volunteered — the shop, the hall, the garden, the park, the newsletter, the show. None of it needs a commitment or a committee to begin with. Most of it starts with a phone call.
If you have an hour now and then
- Any of the village groups. The directory lists every one with a name and a number beside it. Ringing and saying “can I help with anything?” is the whole process.
- The Link Park. There are volunteer mornings — see the diary for the next one, and just turn up.
- Auchencairn Climate Transition. The community allotment meets weekly and takes anybody, including people who have never grown anything.
If you would help in an emergency
The village has a resilience plan for storms, long power cuts, flooding and snow that closes the roads. It works by knowing in advance who has a 4×4, a generator, a chainsaw, a spare room or first-aid training — not by anybody being on duty.
Read the plan, and if you are willing to be on the list, say so. Being on it is not a rota and does not commit you to turning out.
If you can spare a bit more
- Stand for the community council. It meets monthly and it is where decisions about the village get made. What the council does and when it meets — anybody may come to a meeting without standing for anything.
- Help run a hall. Both halls are kept going by committees, and both would rather have more hands than fewer.
- Tell the village what is happening. Anybody can put an event on the diary or report a problem, with no account and no permission.
This list is short because we have not asked everybody yet. If your group needs hands and is not here, tell the council and it will be added — that is a better page than one padded out with guesses about what other people need.
